Who: Today, we get to make a few friends.
What: That’s right! Some wriggly friends we call earthworms. Come along and grab a trowel!
Where: In most gardens, we can find a handful of worms for every square yard of soil.
Why: By eating the fallen leaves, rotting fruit, dead insects and some bits of rock, earthworms can form castings in the soil that provide the rich nutrients that help plants GROW.
When: Look for worms on the ground after it rains or watering the garden. Do you see any worm castings on the surface? Slowly dig up a trowel full of soil and inspect the worms that you find.
How: How does it move? Head or tail, which end is which? How does it feel? Soft & slimy? What does it do when placed on the soil?
